Discarded Pitch

While I was deciding which exhibition review to write I was deciding between two, this is the one that got discarded, but I thought I'd leave it here in case anyone has seen the “The Performance of Shadows” at Hart House and had any thoughts about it!

How does one materialize the untouchable, unseeable and unimaginable? “The Performance of Shadows,”' at the Hart House Art Museum, showcases the works of Betye Saar, Tim Whiten, and Erika DeFreita as they grapple with their own intuition on exploring spirituality, consciousness, and ephemerality. This compilation of works was able to evoke deep inner feelings, allowing my own senses to be engaged in the works, helping to explore the ideas that don’t have a physical manifestation. This exhibition is timely, as we are in a world where we are constantly fed quick images, quick answers, and quick bites of information.  “The Performance of Shadows,” feels meditative, requiring viewers to slow down and sink into their own feelings to better understand things we cannot see and things that don’t have simple answers. With a broad range of mediums including prints, a video-performance, and sculptures, as well as works coming from different time periods, viewers are able to experience differing explorations of nothingness transporting through history. This exhibition review would use a personal take on how this exhibition stirred feelings within myself as I attempted to sit with works without a prior reading of the artist's statements and use my own intuition to feel the works instead of understanding them.
