Blog #10: BAROQUE TECHNOPATRIARCHY: REPRODUCTION" by Paul B. Preciado

Reading "BAROQUE TECHNOPATRIARCHY: REPRODUCTION" by Paul B. Preciado reminded me a lot of our last weeks discussion in class on International Art Language. While raising many interesting points of discussion it does so with the use of many incomprehensible terms, diluting and distracting from his content.

Some being:

  • necropolitic
  • obfuscating
  • necropatriarchal
  • extractivism
  • antimiscegenation
  • physiognomic
  • infracitizens
  • sexo-industrial Taylorization and genital Fordism
  • recrudescence
  • bioenvironment

And drum roll please...
  • pharmacopornographic
Now I have no problem with learning some new terminology, but the article was SO densely packed with these jargonistic terms it felt as though I was just reading words scattered next to each other without actual meaning or content. They feel like a distraction from what the author is trying to say and overcomplicated his ideas. If the article is attempting to create realizations for it's readers, to gain a better understanding of societal systems of power, thus allowing us to try and break them down, using language that is accessible and understandable should be of utmost importance.

The context of this article also being in ArtForum also piqued my interest as it differed from other articles that I've read usually having more connection and focus on artworks. This piece had images of art scattered through the article but to my surprise never detailed them.

I found Preciado's discussion about how technologies have changed the face of reproduction through items like the pill, in vitro fertilization and other means that take place outside of the body, to be thought-provoking and adding to the conversation of how we define masculine and feminine features.
